HOW
TO PREPARE FOR A PERFORMANCE TEST
You should be prepared
for an MSS test in the same manner as you would a race (rested,
hydrated, fed, and with at least 48 hrs of no high-intensity training).
1. Bring your own bicycle
upon which you are most well-trained (if available, select a cassette
with a tighter gear ratio, e.g. 12-23).
2. To obtain accurate
data you must be well-recovered (no hard training within
48 hrs), well-hydrated & normally fed.
3. You may warm up for
the testing session upon arrival on the ergometer trainer.
ABOUT
THE MAXIMAL STEADY STATE - PERFORMANCE TEST
A maximal steady state
(MSS) test will accurately and reliably predict your MSS heart rate
and power output. MSS is a 30 minute performance threshold as it
reflects "real-world" performance, such as a 20 km time
trial.
HR and power training
zones are then determined from your unique and current MSS. Consultation
is included to define your training zones, what occurs physiologically
when you train at those levels of intensity, and how to apply the
information to your training.
The MSS test protocol
was designed and validated by Dario Fredrick, specifically for trained
cyclists . The protocol validation study was presented at the 2003
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Conference and is in
submission for publication (Fredrick,
2003).
An MSS testing session should take approximately 1-1.5 hrs including
warm up/warm down and detailed consultation of the results. The
test is performed on your own bicycle
on a CompuTrainer Pro 3D stationary ergometer.
